Zzyzx, a small complex of buildings located in the Mojave Desert midway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, was once a spa and retreat of sorts for devout Christians. It was run by a colorful fellow named Curtis Springer. He crafted the name Zzyzx because he wanted to have the last word (in the dictionary that is 😉 ) Zzyzx is now an educational hub for universities centering on desert studies, including the Miocene Mojave (pdf).
